Step 1: Stop using the door immediately
Do not press the opener button again, and do not try to raise or lower the door by hand. Every movement risks pulling more rollers free and dropping the door entirely.
Step 2: Keep people, pets, and cars away
Treat the door like the unstable object it is. Move vehicles out if, and only if, the door is safely clear of the opening. If the door is partly closed over the opening, leave everything where it is.
Step 3: Do not pull the red release cord
On a healthy door, the release cord disconnects the opener. On a derailed door, it can remove the only thing still holding the door up. Leave it alone unless a technician tells you otherwise.
Step 4: Photograph and call a professional
A few phone photos help the technician arrive with the right parts. Then call for emergency service. A derailed door is a genuine emergency and reputable companies treat it as one.
Why doors come off track
